┃ Overview

Nitronic 50 (UNS S20910, XM-19), is recognized as a nitrogen-enhanced austenitic stainless steel. It possesses a unique combination of desirable characteristics including impressive strength, ductility, toughness, corrosion resistance, and fabricability. This material is commonly provided in the annealed state and demonstrates exceptional mechanical properties at extremely low and elevated temperatures, making it highly versatile. Conventional welding techniques can be employed, although it should be noted that welding may result in a reduction of mechanical strength. Furthermore, Nitronic 50 exhibits outstanding resistance to sulphide cracking and intergranular attack, and retains non-magnetic properties even when subjected to cold working or sub-zero temperatures.

┃Corrosion Resistance

Nitronic 50 exhibits exceptional corrosion resistance, surpassing Types 316, 316L, 317, and 317L in various environments. In many applications, the material's annealed state at 1066 °C (1950 °F) offers sufficient corrosion resistance along with a higher level of strength. However, in highly corrosive media or when the material will be used in the as-welded condition, it is advisable to specify the annealed condition at 1121 °C (2050 °F). Additionally, Nitronic 50 demonstrates cracking resistance in boiling 42% MgCI2 solution, falling between that of 304L and 316L stainless steel. It is important to note that this solution represents an extremely aggressive and accelerated environment.

┃Heat Treatment

Heat treatment does not render Nitronic 50 hardenable. The material is typically supplied in an annealed condition, which involves heating it to a temperature range of 1066 to 1121 °C (1950 to 2050 °F). This annealing process enhances the material's mechanical properties while preserving its excellent corrosion resistance.

┃ Heating and Pickling

To ensure proper handling of Nitronic 50 during heating and pickling processes, it is recommended to follow the general guidelines applicable to stainless steel.

Heating: Prior to welding, Nitronic 50 should undergo preheating within a temperature range of 200 to 400°C (392 to 752°F). This preheating step helps minimize the risk of thermal cracking during the welding process.

Pickling: For pickling Nitronic 50, a pickling solution comprising a mixture of nitric acid and hydrofluoric acid can be utilized. The material is immersed in this pickling solution for a specific duration. This pickling process effectively removes oxide scales, heat-tint, and other surface contaminants that may have formed during heating or welding operations. It is important to adhere to proper safety precautions and follow applicable regulations when working with these acids.

┃ Hot and Cold Forming

Nitronic 50 is renowned for its exceptional hot and cold forming capabilities, making it amenable to a wide range of forming processes.

Hot Forming: When hot forming Nitronic 50 stainless steel, it is advisable to heat the material gradually and uniformly within the temperature range of 1100 to 1200°C (2012 to 2192°F). This controlled heating process minimizes the risk of thermal stresses and distortion. Subsequently, the material can be shaped using methods such as forging, hot rolling, and hot extrusion. In most applications, post-forming heat treatment is not required for Nitronic 50 stainless steel. However, in certain instances where stress relief is necessary, a solution annealing treatment may be carried out after hot forming.

Cold Forming: Nitronic 50 can be readily cold formed through bending, drawing, and deep drawing processes. It possesses a high level of ductility, enabling significant deformation without substantial loss of material properties. It is important to note, however, that excessive cold working, particularly in heavily cold-reduced sections, can result in increased hardness and reduced ductility. Care should be taken to avoid excessive cold working to maintain the desired material properties.

┃Machining

Nitronic 50 exhibits machining characteristics that are comparable to other austenitic stainless steels. However, in comparison to type 304 and 316 stainless steels, Nitronic 50 is more prone to cold work hardening and offers higher strength. Therefore, it is recommended to use more powerful, robust, and rigid tooling when machining Nitronic 50 to prevent tools from slipping or sliding over the material. Additionally, the use of coated carbide tooling is advised as it can enable higher cutting rates. Despite its tendency for work hardening, Nitronic 50 is capable of producing a good surface finish when properly machined.
