┃Corrosion Resistance

┃Heat Treatment

Inconel 718 undergoes two primary heat treatment methods to optimize its strength and performance. The first method involves a solution anneal at temperatures ranging from 1700 to 1850°F, followed by rapid cooling, typically achieved through water quenching. This is followed by precipitation hardening at 1325°F for 8 hours. The material is then furnace cooled to 1150°F and held at this temperature for a total aging time of 18 hours, before being air cooled.


The second method involves a solution anneal at higher temperatures, typically within the range of 1900 to 1950°F, followed by rapid cooling through water quenching. This is followed by precipitation hardening at 1400°F for 10 hours. The material is then furnace cooled to 1200°F and held at this temperature for a total aging time of 20 hours, before being air cooled.


If the material is intended to undergo machining, forming, or welding, it is typically acquired in the mill annealed or stress relieved condition, which provides it with optimal malleability for fabrication. After the fabrication process, the material can be heat treated as required, in accordance with the applicable specifications.


These heat treatment methods play a vital role in enhancing the strength and performance of Inconel 718, ensuring its suitability for a wide range of applications.


┃ Heating and Pickling

When heating Inconel 718, it is paramount to ensure precise temperature control of both the furnace and the material being heated. Furthermore, it is crucial to use fuels with an extremely low sulfur content to prevent any adverse effects. Additionally, it is imperative that the alloy is thoroughly cleaned and free from any oil, paint, grease, or shop soil prior to being placed in the furnace. To prevent air infiltration, it is recommended to maintain a slight positive pressure within the furnace.


It is important to note that when Alloy 718 is heated in a reducing atmosphere, a thin, adherent green-black film of oxide will form on the material's surface. Conversely, when the alloy is exposed to oxidizing atmospheres, a heavy black scale is produced, which can be challenging to remove. Therefore, every precaution should be taken during the heating process to ensure that only the desired green-black film is formed, minimizing the formation of the undesirable black scale.


These precautions and considerations are crucial in maintaining the integrity and optimal performance of Inconel 718 during the heating process, ensuring its suitability for a wide range of applications.


┃ Hot and Cold Forming

Inconel 718 exhibits exceptional resistance to deformation during hot forming, thanks to its high strength. If hot forming is required, it is essential to utilize powerful equipment capable of withstanding the demands of the process. Hot forming of Inconel 718 is typically conducted within the temperature range of 1650°F to 2050°F. During the final stages of hot forming, it is crucial to work the metal uniformly while gradually reducing the temperature, ultimately achieving a light reduction within the range of 1650°F to 1750°F. This meticulous procedure is necessary to ensure optimal notch ductility in stress-rupture applications, especially when the material has undergone annealing and aging.


Moreover, Inconel 718 can also be cold-formed using standard procedures commonly employed for steel and stainless steel. This versatility allows for greater flexibility in manufacturing processes and expands the range of applications for which Inconel 718 can be utilized.

To ensure optimal machining results, it is crucial to choose appropriate tool materials that can withstand the demands of working with Inconel 718. Additionally, the tool design should be tailored to effectively handle the material's unique properties. Operating speeds should be carefully determined to strike a balance between achieving efficient material removal and minimizing the risk of work-hardening. Coolants play a vital role in dissipating heat generated during machining, helping to maintain tool integrity and preserve the quality of the machined components.

┃Welding

Welding Inconel 718 demands careful attention and the application of specific techniques, owing to its distinctive metallurgical properties. When selecting welding consumables, it is highly recommended to opt for AWS A5.14 ERNiFeCr-2, ERNiFeCr-1, and other nickel-based filler metals that are specifically designed for Inconel 718. These filler metals have been tailored to offer exceptional compatibility and mechanical properties when used in conjunction with Alloy 718.
