Corrosion Resistance: Type 309s stainless steel pipes provides excellent general corrosion resistance, surpassing Type 304 in marine atmospheres and offering high resistance to sulfite liquors. It is primarily valued as a heat-resistant alloy, with a destructive scaling temperature around 2000°F, ensuring good scaling resistance in both continuous and intermittent high-temperature service where oxidation resistance is critical.
High Temperature Corrosion: For high-temperature service, stainless steel 309s pipe performs reliably under most conditions, with maximum continuous service temperatures ranging from 1742°F (in high-sulfur oxidizing atmospheres) to 1922°F (in standard oxidizing conditions). While it outperforms most heat-resistant stainless steels, its performance in reducing, nitriding, or carburizing atmospheres is more limited compared to higher-performance nickel alloys like Alloy 600 or 800.
Heat Treatment: Stainless steel 309s cannot be strengthened by heat treatment due to its stable austenitic structure. While cold working increases strength, that gain is lost if the material is heated to high service temperatures without a prior full anneal, as the cold-worked state softens. Moreover, using cold-worked material at high temperatures can harm its long-term creep resistance.
Fabrication: Type 309s can be roll formed, stamped, and drawn readily. In process, annealing is often required to reduce hardness and increase ductility
Weldability: 309s stainless steel is generally considered to have weldability, its equivalent to the most common alloys of the austenitic class 304 and 304L.
309s stainless steel pipe are used exclusively for their high temperature oxidation resistance, excellent high temperature strength, along with their resistance to creep deformation and environmental attack. Some examples include, but are not limited to:
Heating elements
Aircraft and jet engine parts
Heat exchangers
Carburizing annealing products
Sulfite liquor handling equipment
Kiln liners
Boiler baffles
Refinery and chemical processing equipment
Auto exhaust parts
